You can never out-exercise a bad diet
Want to get in shape and look and feel better?
Thinking about all the work it will be to do so?
There’s a way you can cut that work dramatically! Eat better.
Stop eating sugar. Stop eating stuff out of cellophane. Stop eating so much flour and cheese. Drink water – that’s it. Eat meat and veggies. Don’t eat big dinners and don’t eat within 3 hours before bed. After a while, you’ll be fine with it.
Now you are lighter, leaner, and feel better.
Add in some regular reasonable exercise, and you are a new person!
You can never out-exercise a bad diet.
I’ve been fasting for over seven years now. Love it!!
Thank you for shining a light on this! Think about what we’re feeding our kids. Chronic metabolic disease is running rampant in this country and I appreciate that a voice like yours is helping bring this to the forefront of our community’s conscience.
Hey Larry! Love your daily posts. However, as a registered dietitian, I don’t agree with today’s thought. There is no evidence that eating at certain points in the day make us healthier. Flour, cheese, and sugar can all be consumed and you can still lead a very healthy life. I do all of the above and like to have a small snack before bed and I’m currently training for a marathon.
Some people may not be able to afford unpackaged “whole” foods and so cellophane wrapped, banana bread might be all they can provide to their hungry children at home- and that is much better to have as a breakfast than a kid trying to learn while starving. Do I agree North America can be much better in what it provides and how it markets food? Absolutely. Is the average American diet full of processed high sugar/fat/salt food? Yup. Does the majority of people need to exercise more? 110%. But just some thoughts, as making comments on diet and nutrition is so complex with no “one answer fits all”.
Truth, sugar and carbs are the source of most health problems in America. The worst thing is the American dietry association has been lying to us for years with that food pyramid, its literally ass backwards!!!
Sugar; the first drug you will ever receive – given to you by the people you trust the most, as a REWARD for “being good”! Drug?? Yes, Drug. It meets all of the criteria:
It has no nutritional value.
It’s bad for you.
It’s Highly addictive.
What else do we need to know?
Thanks, Larry! Great points today & every day! 🫶🏽
I love the title of the blog today. Simple sentence with a lot of truth
Amen
It’s pretty simple Eat real food drink water and walk – that takes care of basic health needs
The crap they serve at school cafeterias is criminal !
Technically you can eat a horrible diet if you burn more calories than you consume. I’m doing multi-year experimentation with diet and health testing. So far, I can confirm that being not-fat is not the same as healthy. Fitness is different than health. So while you can be fit and lean eating cookies and doughnuts, you’re health will suffer in the long run. Unfortunately, diet and health are complex, but Michael Pollan has it pretty close: “Eat real food, mostly plants, not too much.”
Larry, I agree with your assessments and have found the same to be true in my family. My parent decided in the early 80’s to cut out all processed sugars, all synthetic fats, all white flour products and took it a step further and cut out all meats that were “forbidden” in the old testament of the Bible. The instant result was that my dad lost 30-40 pounds within a few months and has kept the weight off since. I am one of 10 children and we never went to the doctor while growing up for anything other than broken bones and dental work. We never had a sickness requiring medical assistance to get well. Now that I’m grown and have my own family and 8 children we eat very much the same. We are a little looser on the sugars because my wife has a bit of a sweet tooth and so do my children. We have had a similar experience with medical care in that we have only had to go for broken bones and teeth and maybe 3 serious sicknesses. Oh, and did I mention we also cut out all vaccines at the same time? This might not work for everyone but I am a big believer in not putting things into our body that didn’t naturally occur in nature. It’s nearly impossible to do that but the more we limit the unnatural elements entering our bodies the better off we will be.
I have heard it said “you cannot outrun the fork.”

Happy Birthday Think Daily!
April 2024 marks 15 full years of Think Daily! I started writing them in 2009.
For me, Think Daily has been a tool and habit that has proven the following –
To learn is one thing – to teach is an even higher level of learning.
To put good out into the world with no expectation of anything in return, bears great returns.
It has made me a better thinker.
It has kept me out of the dark dungeon of thoughts and kept me away from those sources of bad information and fear.
By talking about good ideas myself, I am more inclined to follow my own advice at the moments when it matters. I am still working on that. (Gosh imagine what a caveman I would be had I not been working on myself all this time!)
I have become very good at recognizing good ideas from bad ones by practicing. Practice builds mastery.
You have to become a better thinker before you can become a better performer.
Thank you for subscribing and being in this community and on this journey with me!

The Common Denominator of Success
Every successful person formed the habit of doing things that failures don’t like to do.
The successful are influenced by the desire for pleasing results. Failures are influenced by the desire for pleasing methods and are inclined to accept results that can be obtained by doing things they like to do.
It is easier to adjust ourselves to the hardships of a poor living than to adjust ourselves to the hardships of creating a better one.
What hardships have you chosen?
“I’ll never let go” to Think Daily, Larry.
Go, Ross!
I love this! Success is truly a habit and once formed it increases exponentially. Once we resolve ourselves to doing the hard things there is only the task of doing it left. Often we spend more time and effort avoiding the hard thing than it would take to actually just do it. Those who avoid hard or unpleasant activities will miss many of the best opportunities in their life!
Ross Rocks! Make that a shirt! haha

Choose your beliefs
What you believe about yourself, what you can do and how, and how the world is, is a critical component of what you will accomplish in life.
If you believe you can NOT do a thing, you will not try or give it your best effort, and give up quickly.
If you believe you are worthy, able, and see yourself doing it, you will.
The inner game shows up in the outer game.
“If no belief is objectively true all the time – then you get to choose the beliefs you accept at the time that are most useful.” – Derek Sivers
Your beliefs are your limitations.
Choose them wisely.
Do your own thinking
“Where all think alike, no one thinks very much.” – Walter Lippman
How much of what you believe, associate with, and repeat is from the thinking and refrains of others or the group?
How much is from your own clear observation and thought?
I hate to say this, but I’m shocked at the fact that thinking for yourself seems to be a lost art in our world these days. I question the survival of mankind should our worldwide tech crash. This summer we’re hitting our goals in our breakout year in Indy. Rain has been good to us this month. I hope it continues to come. Personally, my youngest daughter graduate’s college.
We’ll be going to NYC to see Hamilton with our granddaughters. Looking forward to making some good memories.
2500 mile off road motorcycle ride. Nothing better for good memories, good friends, motorcycles gorgeous scenery!!
Humans display many cognitive biases that make them follow and repeat the crowd. It comes from the evolutionary desire and need to fit in to optimize chances of survival. These biases lead to “groupthink,” where the consensus decisions are irrational out of a desire to please the ingroup.
“Doing your own thinking” is critical to good decision-making, but what information are you thinking about? What is the framework of your thinking? Humans use heuristics, mental shortcuts, for thinking about things – and often do not follow valid rules of inference. This leads to a long list of common logical fallacies. To produce the best results from your own thinking, it’s best to use a scientific framework and be aware of your own cognitive biases — otherwise, you may come up with some whacky nonsense.

The easy way will not make you happy
One could say that the purpose of life is to be happy. But in a great irony, doing the easy thing and doing things that are fun all the time will not make you happy in the long run. People who seek short-term pleasures to make them happy will always be looking for greater pleasures, and in the end, feel shallow and empty.
It turns out ceaseless leisure and short-term pleasures do not, in themselves, equate to long-term fulfillment and purpose and the deep sense of happiness that comes with them.
“Happiness does not come from doing the easy work but from the afterglow of satisfaction that comes after the achievement of a difficult task that demanded our best.” – Theodore Isaac Rubin
Pleasure or purpose? Happiness or meaning?
What we want is to matter. The struggle makes it worthwhile and matter.
Great post as always, Larry. I think that something I’ve always strived for is to be so unassuming as to be easily forgotten, but to be so consequential as to be unforgettable. It’s a hard balance to find, and not easily achieved, but it helps me find purpose in what I do without making doing things my purpose.
Thanks for helping us think daily – Have a Great New England Spring Day! 🙂
Hedonic consumption vs the hard work of leaving the world better than you found it? Looking back at this decision from 10 years in the future, which path would I take?
I love this so much. Two years ago I chose to test out both sides of the fence, and I started to search out the easy path to see what was all about the rage… and I lost myself and became an incredibly depressed, angry version of myself that I had never seen before. Fast forward two years and I pulled myself out of the darkness, and found the path that isn’t easy once again as well as regained my incredible sense of purpose and joy that I had previously had, but this time with more conviction around why it mattered. This truly matters.

Taking care of yourself is important. If everyone did it well, we’d have a much better world because many people wouldn’t need so much help.
So the first and best thing you can do for the world is to take care of yourself.
But we are made for much more than that. If you can take care of yourself AND someone else, or a lot of someone else’s, that is the definition of a hero.
Agree with you 100% that mothers are heroes!
Jared is a beast!!!
Well said – thank you, Larry.
Mothers are the glue that holds this world together. Way underrated! We are also very thankful for Jared here in Indy. Good young man that has been with us for five years now.
This made me smile as an expecting mother!
We are so grateful for Jared in Indy!!!
Congratulations Alexis!!!

It’s your choice.
What will you say yes to today?
Congratulations!!! I remember when you was just starting your daily emails.
Good morning, Larry and everyone else. Larry, you wrote a message a few months back that stuck with me regarding how everyone’s priority suddenly becomes a priority of yours when they message you in any way. You wrote about how important it is that a person not let that happen to them. I’m a person that used to like answering every email and returning every call. I’ve since stopped being that way, all thanks to your message that day. The freedom from that has led me to be more focused on my goals instead of always being rerouted to focus on someone else’s goals or need. Thanks to that message, my time is more mine now!
Love this…..so true!!
Welcome to Africa Larry! – Thanks for being an inspiration!

Good morning! A good day starts with a good message to you, by you. Having a good day is a choice, it’s not by luck that they happen! You make it happen for you! I tell myself every morning that I AM GOING to have a good day.
Words are everything. How you think them, say them and write them.
”I get to” not “I have to” makes a big difference!
Once you realize that everything and everyone around you is no smarter than you. That YOU alone are responsible for your outcomes. And lastly, that failing in pursuit of something is apart of learning. There is nothing that can prevent you from winning. Get out of your own way, Accept the challenge, and go!
Life is easier if you approach everything as a challenge instead of a problem and fully believe that there is a good solution to every challenge. It’s how I think and it’s how I raised my children. When challenges present themselves we immediately go into problem solving mode. We don’t cast blame, we don’t berate, we don’t go into the “would have’s, should have’s”. My grandfather likes to say “No use crying over spilt milk, clean it up and move on.”
